This quotation is from page 14 in the last two lines of chapter one.
Our task was to comment on this quotation:
In my Opinion, this sentence is very important, and plays a kind of main role in the whole novel, because Ady (Adrian) is Mannys best friend all the time, altough Manny stays in India for a very long time. Ady always supports Manny with his problematic family situation. He never leaves him alone. This is a real (best) friendship. Both of them know each other since Junior School, and grew up together. It seems as if the friedship does not have a future, because Mannys father does not like Ady because of his different culture background. Ady is black Jamaican. Mannys father always discriminates him by calling him "kalah" or " goreh". Ady and Manny also share the same hobbies. in Their free time they play football together. While reading the whole novel the reader gets the impression that they belong together. The quotation which says that his adventures with Ady are a prelude to his future is very important, because at the end they are still together. Manny wants to live his own life, independent from all the traditions and away from his family. Ady is the one who helps Manny so i can imagine that they will also spend their future together.

Arranged Marriage?!
In the following task we had to find several arguments which are positive in comparison with an arranged marriage:
Pro:
Pro:
- Perhaps when a person is not quiet pretty he can be happy about the fact that he gets a wife.
- It is a negative fact that you do not know the person you should marry, but perhaps you really fall in love with the person. Then it is a positive argument.
- Arranged Marriage is a tradition, which excists for a very long time. So it is positive, because the people only want to keep their tradition.
- No one is lonely when you arrange marriages.
- The next generation is safe.
- Everything is much easier, because you do not have to search for a peson.
Strong distinctions between Manny and Mannys family
In this task we should write soemthing about why there might be huge differences between the family members regarding identity:
There might be huge differences between the family members regarding identity, because there mothercountry is a different one. Mannys father, and Mannys mother come from India. Mannys two brothers Harry and Ranjit also come from India (Punjabi). Manny is the only family member whose cultural identity is different. Manny is born in England. In the quotation on page 22 line 22-26 Manny says that England is his home, because he was born here. He can not imagine to live in India, because he does not know any places where to go. In England he knows how things work. Mannys roots are in England, and the roots of his family in Punjabi. I think that this situation is a very difficult one especially for Manny, because he has to live a life in which he is not involved and with which he can not identify. Perhaps when Manny was born in India, he has other roots. The other way around as well. The problem is that Manny should become ja Punjabi man altough he does not want to. His family especially his father ignores his real cultural identity.

Analyse how your characters attitude towards identity is presented in the novel
When i analyse Mannys characters attitude towards identity, i see that his identity does not change iin the whole novel, because at the begining, during, and at the end he wants to live his own life. He does not want to live under pressure, and he does not want to marry. His identity is that he wants to be english, because he feels english. He can not imagine to live like his father or his brothers ( Harry and Ranjit). Manny has got an own estimation, and that is the opposite of the way his family thinks. He never trails away, and loses his special identity. He has got a special identity, because all of th time he lives his own life. He has got future plans which he does not loose. Finally he earns his own money, by working at a supermarket.
He is ja very strong and lively person.
